Choice of career

A career of my choice? Back then when I was a child, many kids wanted to become a superhero like Superman or Batman. The closest choice to it was a policeman. And this was my childhood dream. As for now, I am open to a wide variety of choices, a teacher, psychologist, being in the military force, or even a lawyer. In secondary school, we are open to activities like managing a school event such as Student Councilor Investiture. Joining various Co-Curriculum Activities open us out to different individual skills needed in life. Nevertheless, we should decide this path on our own and none should be interfering into it lest it may affect.
The past childhood dreams are unrealistic and as time had passed, interest may changed. And sooner or later, we are to narrow our views and decide on our own career of choice and interest. Through thorough and careful thinking, taking into consideration my interest and capability, I decided on being a Event Manager.
On the whole, clients will be coming up to Event Managers with a very vague idea and it all depends on the Manager whether to evolve it into a reality or just a "all talk, no action" situation. From concerts to farewell parties, and conferences to promotions fair, are all planned by these managers. Firstly, managers will come up with a basic framework, and after which prepares the marketing plans. Well, of course, sponsors, vendors etc are the ones that make the event possible. Naturally, hunt for sponsors for food and beverages etc. The search of suitable venues for the particular event, a marriage's venue will differ from a farewell party. Hire of various artistes and performers may be needed. Invitation cards may have to be given out and, event such as a ballroom dinner, menus are needed. Lookout for the stage and lightings, arrangements for transportations for different people. At least 3 weeks before the event will kick-off, the plans and every aspect of the event must be finalised and verified. Any last minute changes may affect the on-going performance of it. Usually, event managers will start work months before the event to assure punctuality and professionalism.
As any other job has, skills are always needed in any aspect.

  • Analytical thinking and problem solving - Analytical and critical thinking, and problem solving are compulsory skills needed in this field. Fast acknowledgment of various problems, recognised that it has to be solved. From there, think of solutions and how to salvage the situation, and how to avoid such problems in the future.

  • Client service orientation – It is the ability of being focused to one's client and dedicated to meeting the needs of the customer. Being client focused, he must attempt to realise the client's needs, put them at ease. Strong bonds of respect and trust must be build during the interaction.

  • Good negotiating skills - On the contrary it is a skill in business which, when developed, makes you an astute minded businessman.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meeting deadlines – One should be able to work under much pressure and stress, and able to meet the deadlines. In the meticulous planning and arrangements, one small mistake, it takes, to trigger off the worst outcome of the event. At rehearsals, one should remain calm and keep their cool, and most importantly, perform our own role as planned.

  • Teamwork, facilitation and co-operation – Teamwork is always needed is in such a project. “Teamwork” does not consists of an “I”. Nevertheless, one should not only know how to lead a team, but also co-operate with everyone and finally, get the job done. One should be able to build a team of efficient people and bring the best out of them, which is also facilitating their effectiveness.

  • Planning, co-ordination and organisation – It is the ability to coordinate effectively and organise oneself or situations in a proper manner.

  • Good networking skills – An event manager has to have many contacts and a wide network in order to be successful. The more contacts one has, the more successful he is. Regardless in what business one is in, only networking can make one be successful. Therefore, it is a must to enhance one's networking skills, go out into the public and talk to the people.
